Mission, Culture & Values

Our Mission

The mission of Denver Discovery School is to value every child’s individualized intellectual and social strengths through rigorous, purposeful and relevant learning and leadership opportunities. We foster perseverance and intellectual curiosity so that our students are prepared to meet 21st century academic and personal demands.

Our Culture

At DDS, one of our most celebrated and critical attributes is our school culture. We believe that the development of our students’ personal and global discovery, compassion, gratitude, collaboration, perseverance, and leadership, matter just as much as their mastery of the Common Core State Standards.

Our commitment to character, personal development, and the overall health and happiness of our students can be witnessed at Morning Meetings, on the basketball court, and anywhere else DDS happens to be. From our all-star staff to our exemplary students, the DDS culture radiates from our entire community. When high standards and rigor intersect with a supportive and personalized path to success, incredible things can happen in a student’s life.

We invite you to explore more of this site, or come in for a visit, to experience our culture first-hand. Welcome to the DDS Family!

Our Values

We are filled with a sense of wonder. We are eager and enthusiastic to explore.

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Andre Gide

We are a safe and caring community. We treat each other with kindness and commit to being of service to others.

“No matter who we are, no matter how successful, no matter what our situation, compassion is something we all need to receive and give.” – Catherine Pulsifer

We appreciate what makes us each unique. We are thankful for those around us, for what we have, and who we are becoming. We celebrate our accomplishments.

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” – Melody Beattie

We listen to and value diverse opinions. We include everyone and work together to creatively solve problems.

“We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.

Martin Luther King Jr.

We strive to be our best and take risks even in the face of adversity. We take on increasingly rigorous challenges.

“Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th.” – Julie Andrews

With integrity, we walk beside each other, learning and inspiring one another to boldly make the world better.

“Practice self-awareness, self-evaluation, and self-improvement. If we are aware that our manners – language, behavior, and actions – are measured against our values and principles, we are able to more easily embody the philosophy. Leadership is a matter of how to be, not how to do.” – Frances Hesselbein
